inspired by Barry Glassner’s Culture of Fear

In the national anthems and political messages in America, one will hear and see references to "home of the brave" and "land of the free," yet this is far from the truth and reality that permeates American culture. Realistically, the American culture can be described as "home of the fear" and "land of the insecure." The use of fear by political leaders and the media have been used throughout human history, yet in recent times the invocation of fear has been extensively used to the point that many Americans are fearful of the simplest things in life. It has been reported and documented that people are scared of airplanes, yet more Americans die in car crashes every year than in the culmination of airplane crashes of the past two decades. The juxtaposition of reality and false illusions will be explored in Culture through music and visual images. The following is a title list of themes that will be explored:

Roadways
"They’re all around you, everywhere you drive, waiting to explode . . . " Hugh Downs - 20/20

Crime Stats
"Conley Street, on this city’s northeast side, is a pleasant looking row of brick and wooden homes with small, neat lawns, a street for years was the realization of the American dream for middle-income families. But in the past few years, Conley has become a street of crack, crime, and occassional burst of gun fire. And at 2:15 A.M. Monday, the bullets killed Army Spec. Anthony Riggs, something that all of Iraq’s Scud missles could not do during his seven months with a Patriot Missle battery in Saudi Arabia." - Washington Post

School Violence
"Suicide has become one of the major causes of death amongst American teenagers . . ." Times

Plane Wrecks
"Stay clear of commuter airplanes with fewer than 30 seats . . . " USA Today
